How to Set Up Your Headphones/Mic

How to connect and set up your headphone to record and listen to playback:

  1. Connect the headphones to your laptop via USB
  2. Hover your mouse in the upper right-hand corner of your screen and click on the Settings icon
  3. Select Control Panel
  4. Select Hardware and Sound
  5. Select Sound, then Manage Audio Device
  6. You are now in the "Sound" settings window on the Playback tab
  7. Find your device and select it - Headset Earphone - Microsoft LifeChat
  8. Click on Set Default at the bottom of the box
  9. Click on Properties - a new window opens up
  10. Click on the Levels tab
  11. Headset Earphone - move the slider tab to 85
  12. Headset Microphone - move the slider tab to 85
  13. Make sure the little audio icon does not have a red circle in it - if so, click on it to remove it
  14. Click OK at the bottom of the screen - the window closes
  15. Now click on the Recording tab at the top
  16. Find your device and select it - Headset Microphone - Microsoft LifeChat
  17. Click on Set Default at the bottom of the box
  18. Click on Properties - a new window opens up
  19. Click on the Levels tab
  20. Headset Microphone - move the slider tab to 85
  21. Make sure the little audio icon does not have a red circle in it - if so, click on it to remove it
  22. Click OK at the bottom of the screen - the window closes
  23. Click OK in the remaining Sound window - it will close
  24. Do a test narration in Office Mix and see if you can record and hear your playback
  25. Preview your playback
  26. Happy with your recording? Just X out of the black Office Mix window.  
  27. Unhappy with your recording?  Delete it via the Edit your Recording dropdown menu.

A few things to remember when recording:

  • Make sure the little red light is NOT ON on your headphone/mic - the sound is muted when the red light is on and you cannot record
  • Remember to select the slide that corresponds with your narration - DO NOT record everything on the first slide!
  • The length of your audio will not match the duration of your slide (slide default is 7:00 seconds)
