What is a Cricut?

What is a Cricut?

A Cricut is a cutting tool that can cut paper, vinyl, cardboard and fabric.  A Cricut can accommodate special markers that produce beautiful lettering.

What school uses are there for a Cricut machine?

A Cricut can be used to cut letter and symbols for classroom decoration.

They can also be used by students to produce props, artifacts or creative assignments for class.

How does the Cricut work?

How does the Cricut work?

Our libraries all have Cricut Maker machines. Your machine is already set up and may have a common account with a communal username and password. This also means that all projects are stored in a common project library. You can access the Cricut Design Space from your own computer at home as well as the computer in your school library Maker Space. The video below demonstrates the setup and first cut on a Cricut Maker. We will review a first cut together today - but you can go to minute 8.00 if you want to review the cutting process.

Overview: Create a greeting card that would be sent between two famous characters from literature, authors or historical figures. Tailor your message to show your understanding of their accomplishments or the stories in which they appear.

Decide who your card is -

FROM: ____________________________

 TO: __________________________________

Cut Your Card

 - Use a paper cutter to cut your cardstock to the desired unfolded size

 -   For ease, I cut an 8.5 x 11" sheet to 4.25" x 5.5 "

  - Use a scoring tool to create a center fold on your card

Write an interior messageRemember that it should reflect your knowledge and understanding of the character.

This part will be completed using the pen in the Cricut. This will also give you an opportunity to select a font that reflects your ideas about the character's personality.

Create a Cover Image - This can be hand drawn -cut with the Cricut or color printed.

Hint: Take a look at some greeting cards online or in a store. Look at cards that made you think or made you laugh - can you use that format for your card?

Using Pens with Your Cricut Maker

Using Pens With Your Cricut Maker

Your Cricut can also write using Cricut pens. Although other pens can work with the machine, I would recommend staying with the Cricut brand for the best results. The video below gives detailed information about using the pens to create lettering for cards and displays.
