There are great video directions for this project in this LibGuide:

Step 1: Preparing your book

  • You will notice that your selected book is thick. This will provide stable walls for your box.

  • Remove any paper/plastic cover on your book.

  • Start by painting Modge Podge all along the sides of your book on the edges of the pages.

  • Let it dry for at least one day. Two is even better.

  • Place a piece of folded parchment paper or waxed paper inside the cover so the book does not get glued closed.

Step 2: Measuring and cutting the book

  • Now that the book is ready – decide how large of an opening you would like to cut in the center.

  • Remember to leave a wide enough “frame” to support your storage area.

  • You can cut your opening in a standard rectangle or be creative and cut a heart, diamond or other decorative shape.

  •  Use a sharp pencil to draw the opening on the top page.

Step 3: Cutting the opening

  • This is the trickiest part of the project! TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!

  • Cut a few pages at a time. This will be time consuming but worth it when you are done.

  • When the opening is as deep as you would like, paint the inside edges of the storage area with Modge Podge.

Step 4: Decorating Ideas

  • You can glue an envelope into the front or back cover of the book to store special papers and photos.

  • Use decorative paper to line the inside of the book of the inside of the storage area.

Finally, store some wonderful Morton Memory treasures in your box. Enjoy!
